11-2-2025 (BEIJING) China is set to host a pivotal diplomatic gathering aimed at bolstering its strategic partnership with ASEAN nations, as senior officials prepare to convene in the eastern coastal city of Ningbo for high-level talks that could reshape regional cooperation frameworks.
The 31st China-ASEAN Senior Officials’ Consultation, scheduled for 12-14 February in Zhejiang Province, marks a significant milestone in the ongoing dialogue between the Asian powerhouse and its Southeast Asian neighbours.
Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong will spearhead the Chinese delegation in the talks, which will be jointly presided over with Malaysia’s ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting Leader, Dato’ Sri Amran Mohamed Zin. Malaysia currently serves as both the country coordinator for ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations and the rotating chair of ASEAN for 2025.
Speaking at Tuesday’s press briefing in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasised the consultation’s role as a cornerstone of diplomatic engagement between China and ASEAN member states. The annual mechanism has evolved into a crucial platform for foreign affairs coordination between the participating nations.
“The upcoming consultation presents a vital opportunity to build upon the foundations established during previous China-ASEAN leadership summits,” Guo told journalists. He highlighted the meeting’s significance in addressing East Asian cooperation within the contemporary global landscape, whilst facilitating dialogue on pressing regional and international matters of mutual concern.
The gathering in Ningbo is expected to further cement the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and ASEAN, coming at a time when regional economic integration and security cooperation have taken centre stage in East Asian diplomatic discourse.
