7-12-2023 (BEIJING) Chinese Communist Party Politburo Member and Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the need for enhanced law enforcement and security cooperation between China and Myanmar during a meeting with Myanmar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Than Swe, on Wednesday.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in an official statement on its website, disclosed that Wang Yi met with Than Swe in Beijing on the same day, where they jointly presided over the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
Wang Yi underscored the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Myanmar, rooted in deep historical ties and mutual support. China looks forward to Myanmar achieving domestic reconciliation under its constitutional framework and continuing its political transition. Stressing that China never interferes in Myanmar’s internal affairs, Wang Yi commended Myanmar for adhering to the One China principle and expressed confidence in Myanmar’s steadfast opposition to any “Taiwan independence” activities, supporting the cause of Chinese reunification.
Highlighting recent successful collaborative efforts, Wang Yi stated, “Cooperation between China and Myanmar in combating telecommunications fraud in northern Myanmar and rescuing stranded individuals has yielded positive results, effectively deterring criminal elements.” Both nations are urged to strengthen cooperation in law enforcement and security to eradicate the scourge of online gambling and telecommunications fraud completely.
The Chinese Ministry of Public Security had previously announced joint actions against the grave situation of telecommunications fraud in northern Myanmar involving Chinese citizens. Since September this year, Chinese law enforcement agencies and relevant authorities in Myanmar have cooperated in border law enforcement operations, undertaking a series of crackdowns. In November, the Ministry of Public Security reported that Myanmar authorities had transferred 31,000 suspected criminals involved in telecommunications fraud related to northern Myanmar to China.
