22-5-2023 (Shenzhen) The 29th China-ASEAN Senior Officials’ Consultation, in accordance with the agreement between China and ASEAN, is scheduled to take place in Shenzhen, China from May 24 to 26. Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nong Rong, will lead a delegation to the conference and co-chair it alongside U Chan Aye, the ASEAN-Myanmar SOM Leader of Myanmar and the ASEAN Country Coordinator for ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations.
The China-ASEAN Senior Officials’ Consultation serves as a significant annual mechanism for consultation between the foreign affairs departments of China and ASEAN countries. It provides an opportunity to make preparations for the China-ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the China-ASEAN Summit. This year holds special significance as it marks the tenth anniversary of President Xi’s proposal to foster a closer community with a shared future for China and ASEAN, as well as the 20th anniversary of China’s inclusion in the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC). These milestones present new prospects for China-ASEAN cooperation.
During the Consultation, both sides will assess the progress made and explore avenues for future growth in the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and ASEAN. The focus will be on fulfilling the common understandings between the leaders of both sides and deepening practical cooperation in various areas including political security, trade and economy, social and cultural exchange, people-to-people interactions, agriculture, and food security. Through these collaborative efforts, both China and ASEAN aim to contribute positive energy towards the stability and development of the region.
