18-9-2023 (BEIJING) Over the past decade, China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have significantly strengthened their collaboration in the realm of nuclear energy and nuclear technology applications, as stated by the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA).
Liu Jing, the Vice Chairman of CAEA, delivered these remarks during the second China-ASEAN Forum on Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Technology held in Nanning, the capital of China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, over the weekend.
Liu emphasised that China has been actively providing ASEAN member countries with reliable nuclear technology products, services, and solutions. This collaborative effort has not only facilitated professional training but also supported the advancement of peaceful nuclear technology applications.
Speaking at the forum, Kao Kim Hourn, the Secretary-General of ASEAN, expressed his optimism about the forum’s potential to further enhance practical cooperation between ASEAN nations and China in the realms of nuclear technology applications and clean energy. He hoped that this collaboration would significantly contribute to the peaceful utilization of nuclear energy and technology in the context of environmentally sustainable development.
Experts attending the forum echoed these sentiments, underscoring the need for China and ASEAN countries to continue actively promoting cooperation in the field of nuclear technology applications.
Paving the Way for a “Better Home” with Nuclear Technology
During the forum, the CAEA unveiled a document titled “Nuclear Technology for a Better Home,” outlining China’s comprehensive solutions in this domain.
The document provides insights into the development of China’s nuclear technology application industry and presents China’s proposed solutions across various sectors, including industry, agriculture, healthcare, environmental management, and public security.
Liu remarked, “China is committed to expediting the application of nuclear technology in areas such as industry, agriculture, healthcare, and environmental governance to foster economic development and enhance the well-being of its citizens.”
In the field of agriculture, China is poised to offer technology and services related to radiation-induced plant mutation breeding, facilitating the creation of new germplasm and the cultivation of novel crop varieties.
In the healthcare sector, China can provide a comprehensive solution for nuclear medicine imaging diagnosis.
For public security concerns, China is prepared to deliver passenger and carry-on baggage screening solutions for airports and transportation hubs, as outlined in the document.
Co-hosted by the CAEA and the Guangxi government, this year’s forum witnessed the participation of Chinese experts, scholars, and representatives from enterprises and universities. Additionally, more than 400 experts from ASEAN governments, international organisations, enterprises, and universities, alongside delegates from other Asian countries, attended the event.
The first China-ASEAN Forum on Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Technology took place in September 2022, signalling a robust foundation for ongoing cooperation in this vital sphere.
