28-6-2023 (SINGAPORE) In a bid to combat the sweltering heat experienced in Singapore, Changi Airport has introduced innovative measures to ensure the well-being of its airside workers. Among these initiatives is the installation of “refresh pods” that provide a much-needed respite from the scorching temperatures.
Sergeant Irman Hamid, a Certis Aviation Security officer, recently experienced the relief firsthand when he stepped into one of these pod-like machines located at a staff resting area in Changi Airport. With a simple push of a button, cool air began to circulate, instantly alleviating the discomfort caused by the hot and humid weather.
The trial installation of two “refresh pods” aims to reduce the risk of heat injury for workers and has been met with positive feedback. Each pod stands at a height of 2.5 meters and can accommodate up to five workers simultaneously. Operating throughout the day, the pods circulate cool air for approximately 3½ minutes per session, ensuring a refreshing experience. Furthermore, the air inside the pods undergoes a cleaning process that includes ultraviolet-light sterilization, promoting a hygienic environment.
These measures are expected to benefit around 30,000 airside workers at Changi Airport, including those involved in aircraft maintenance, in-flight catering, and various other roles. Unlike employees stationed in air-conditioned buildings, airside workers face the elements directly as they carry out their duties on runways, taxiways, hangars, ramps, and the airport apron.
Over the years, Changi Airport has implemented various cooling measures for airside workers, such as ice dispensers and water coolers. However, with rising temperatures and record-breaking heat in Singapore, additional steps are being taken to prioritize the well-being of those working on the tarmac. The introduction of the “refresh pods” is seen as a quick and effective way for airside workers to cool down during their breaks, offering respite from the intense heat. Furthermore, the pods can be used by workers caught in the rain to dry off.
Changi Airport Group (CAG) collaborated with British company Haystack Dryers to manufacture and develop these unique pods specifically for Changi Airport. The success of the trial will determine whether more refresh pods will be rolled out in the future, enhancing the comfort and safety of airside staff.
Darren Lai, an equipment operator for ground handler Sats, expressed his appreciation for the pods, stating that they have significantly improved working conditions and operational safety for airside personnel. These cooling measures are particularly vital during the months when the heat becomes more severe.
In addition to the refresh pods, CAG has deployed a drinks truck to distribute free cold isotonic beverages to airside workers, aiming to keep them hydrated and refreshed. This initiative will continue regularly between June and August, and may be extended if the hot weather persists. CAG also encourages companies employing airside workers to implement heat acclimatization protocols for new joiners. Gradual exposure to outdoor weather and additional breaks help employees adapt to the working conditions more effectively.
Recognizing the importance of educating supervisors and team leaders, CAG has partnered with Raffles Medical Group to provide educational talks on heatstroke symptoms and first aid for workers suspected of heat stress. Additionally, the airport emergency service, consisting of 500 firefighters, conducts hydration exercises before every training session. Collaborating with Nanyang Technological University’s Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, the service is developing a heat acclimatization program for its staff.
Certis Aviation Security, headed by Mr. Andy Tan, ensures the well-being of its officers deployed outdoors by designating air-conditioned rest areas at airside duty posts. Patrol supervisors regularly deliver chilled drinks to these officers, as they face the highest risk of heat injury. Sergeant Irman, a supervisor himself, expresses concern for his team and emphasizes the importance of providing them with refreshing drinks and additional breaks to cool down.
