The incident, which was captured in a 37-second video that rapidly spread on social media, sent shockwaves through the local community.
In the viral video, security guards can be seen frantically guiding people to safety as the ceiling crumbled. Amid the chaos, terrified visitors can be heard screaming as they hastily evacuated the premises.
The mall’s management took to Facebook to express their profound regret regarding the mishap. According to their official statement, the ceiling collapse occurred at approximately 3 pm, coinciding with a period of severe weather conditions marked by strong winds and torrential rain. This unfortunate incident resulted in minor injuries to three individuals, all of whom have received the necessary medical attention.
In response to the crisis, several sections of the mall, including the main entrance, the adjacent pet-friendly lifts, and a food court, have been cordoned off and will remain closed “until further notice.” However, the remainder of the mall will continue its operations as usual.
PPB Properties, the company that owns Megah Rise Mall, has taken swift action to address the situation. CEO Mr. Low Eng Hooi announced that they have engaged a team of consultants to conduct a comprehensive structural assessment and to initiate the essential repairs and reinforcements.
