15-12-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) While it may not be uncommon to see livestock freely roaming in more rural areas, the sight of cattle tethered to pillars along a shophouse walkway in a city is far from ordinary. A recent viral post on social media platform X showcased several large cattle in such a setting, raising concerns among netizens about the authorities’ inaction regarding the situation. The animals are believed to belong to foreign workers.
On Thursday (14 Dec), an X user with the handle @MALAYSIAVIRALLL shared four pictures of a run-down shophouse, but it was the presence of the cattle that drew attention. In one of the photos, a white cattle was tied to a concrete pillar on the five-foot way, which was visibly stained with dirt. A pile of leaves, presumably food for the animal, lay on the ground nearby. Another photo depicted two additional cattle in a different section of the shophouse, with similar floor tiles indicating it was the same location.
The state of the place was deplorable, with rubbish strewn across the road and filth covering the walkway and walls. According to comments and news portal Majoriti, the shophouse is situated in Pusat Bandar Utara Selayang in Batu Caves, Selangor. Sin Chew Daily reported that the cattle allegedly belonged to foreign workers.
Netizens expressed their dismay and questioned why the authorities had not taken any action. One user queried the whereabouts of the city council, sarcastically asking if they were “eating a blind salary” – implying they were being paid for doing little to no work. Another netizen wondered if the city council was too “afraid of foreigners” to intervene. Some even went so far as to suggest that the authorities themselves were complicit in the “sabotage” of Malaysia.
