3-2-2025 (MANILA) Filipino gymnastics sensation Carlos Yulo and his younger brother Eldrew have voiced their shared Olympic aspirations, even as family tensions continue to simmer in the background.
Speaking at the 2024 Philippine Sportswriters Association Awards Night, Carlos, 25, expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of competing alongside his brother on the Olympic stage. “Having both of us represent the Philippines will be thrilling, though it presents its own challenges,” the double Olympic gold medallist remarked.
“The Olympic qualification journey is demanding, but we’re hopeful of not just qualifying together but also securing podium finishes,” Carlos added, reflecting on their ambitious goals.
His younger sibling Eldrew, 17, who has already made his mark as the current junior Asian vault champion, echoed these sentiments with unwavering determination. “While it may seem like an extraordinary dream, I’m committed to turning it into reality. Nothing is impossible,” the young gymnast affirmed.
These sporting aspirations come against a backdrop of family discord. In August 2024, Carlos publicly aired grievances against his mother, Angelica Poquiz Yulo, through social media, alleging mismanagement of his earnings and unfounded accusations against his girlfriend, Chloe San Jose.
Responding to these allegations, Angelica held a press conference where she defended her actions, stating she had invested her son’s earnings under her name out of maternal concern for his financial future.
Despite attempts at reconciliation, including a substantial peace offering of 5 million Philippine pesos from former politician Chavit Singson, the family rift remains unresolved.
Carlos’s recent sporting achievements have been remarkable, securing his place in history as the first Filipino to claim two Olympic gold medals in a single Games, triumphing in both floor exercise and vault at Paris 2024. Meanwhile, Eldrew continues to build his own impressive legacy, having claimed silver in vault at the 2023 junior championships.
