13-9-2023 (NEW DELHI) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s departure from India is finally on the horizon, scheduled for Tuesday, following a protracted stay in New Delhi due to aircraft technical issues that unfolded after the G20 summit.
Trudeau’s office relayed a statement to POLITICO on Tuesday afternoon, confirming the resolution of the aircraft’s technical glitch and granting clearance for the Canadian delegation to take flight.
Originally intended to depart on Sunday following his participation in the G20 summit over the weekend, Trudeau’s plans were abruptly altered when a mechanical fault emerged on his plane. This unexpected setback extended the prime minister’s stay in India’s capital by an additional two days.
The beleaguered aircraft, a Royal Canadian Air Force CC-150 Polaris, encountered “technical difficulties” that could not be swiftly rectified, as explained by statements from Trudeau’s office. Canada’s Department of National Defense further elucidated the situation in a statement to BBC News, revealing the necessity of replacing a particular component.
Initially, the defense department had announced that a replacement aircraft was en route to New Delhi to retrieve Trudeau, but a change of course redirected the plane to the United Kingdom.
During the G20 summit, Trudeau found himself subject to criticism from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who voiced “strong concerns” regarding protests organized by Sikh separatists in Canada.
