23-7-2023 (PHONOM PENH) The Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), led by Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen, declared a resounding victory in the general election held on Sunday, as reported by a party spokesman.
While the official results were yet to be released, CPP spokesman Sok Eysan confirmed the party’s triumph on Sunday evening, describing it as another significant achievement for the CPP. He stated, “We have won a landslide victory in this election, but we have not yet calculated the number of seats we have gained. This truly reflects people’s confidence in the CPP’s leadership.”
The election witnessed the participation of 18 political parties, vying to elect 125 lawmakers for the National Assembly in a five-yearly electoral cycle. The National Election Committee continued to tally the results from across the country on Sunday evening, with the official outcome set to be unveiled on August 9.
This election marks Cambodia’s seventh since 1993. In the previous general election held in 2018, the CPP secured all 125 seats in the National Assembly, reinforcing its longstanding dominance in the Southeast Asian nation’s political landscape.
The CPP has been at the helm of Cambodia’s governance since 1979, and this latest election victory solidifies its continued reign as the ruling party in the country.
