30-6-2023 (PHONM PENH) Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen has called for unity in safeguarding peace and political stability, as the country prepares for a general election next month. Speaking at a get-together with thousands of factory workers in the capital city, Hun Sen emphasized that peace and political stability not only bring happiness to the people but also attract foreign investors to help develop the country.
Hun Sen stated that new investments would create new jobs, and his government would continue to attract more investors to generate around 300,000 jobs annually for new jobseekers. He added that the country must remain united to safeguard peace to ensure sustainable development.
The call for unity comes as the country readies itself for the general election for the 125-seat National Assembly on July 23. The National Election Committee has announced that 18 political parties will contest the election, with more than 9.7 million eligible voters expected to cast their ballots.
In the last general election held five years ago, Hun Sen’s Cambodian People’s Party won all 125 seats in the National Assembly. The upcoming election will be closely watched to see if there will be any changes in the political landscape. The United States and the European Union have expressed concerns over the political situation in Cambodia, particularly the government’s crackdown on opposition parties and its suppression of the media
