29-6-2023 (PHNOM PENH) Cambodia’s anti-drug police have successfully apprehended a foreign woman in Phnom Penh’s Chamkar Mon district, seizing a significant quantity of narcotics. The National Police announced on Thursday that during the raid on the woman’s condominium on Tuesday, a total of 23.6kg of illicit drugs were confiscated.
After several months of investigation, authorities conducted the operation leading to the arrest of the 43-year-old suspect. The seized drugs included 22.5kg of ecstasy, 0.98kg of ketamine, and 0.13kg of methamphetamine, according to a statement released on the National Police’s website.
In addition to the drugs, law enforcement officers also discovered 123kg of an unknown substance and drug processing equipment in the suspect’s possession.
Cambodia does not impose the death penalty for drug trafficking offenses. However, its laws stipulate that individuals convicted of trafficking over 80 grams of illicit drugs can face life imprisonment.
The Anti-Drug Department of Cambodia reported that from January to May 2023, a total of 7,230 individuals involved in drug-related activities, including 136 foreigners, were arrested. During this period, authorities seized nearly 785kg of narcotics as part of their ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse.
