26-8-2023 (BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN) Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei has approved a recommendation to revoke the membership of the Privy Council and the prestigious title of Pehin Orang Kaya Shahbandar from Awang Mohd Nawawi, according to reports in local news outlets on Friday evening.
The decision, which also includes the removal of all state decorations and medals previously bestowed upon Awang Mohd Nawawi by royal command, took effect on Thursday, as announced in the Borneo Bulletin, the largest daily newspaper in the Sultanate, and on Radio Television Brunei, the national broadcaster.
Awang Mohd Nawawi had served as the private and confidential secretary to the Sultan for many decades and is a well-known figure in Brunei’s political and social circles.
The official statement did not provide any specific reasons for the Sultan’s decision to rescind all titles and honors previously awarded to his former private and confidential secretary.
