According to Sony Susmana, a driving safety expert from the Safety Defensive Consultant Indonesia (SDCI), the frequent incidents of bus drivers engaging in dangerous driving can be attributed to the monotony of their routes. He explains that these drivers, who often traverse the same routes repeatedly, can become bored and resort to extreme driving actions to combat fatigue and drowsiness.
“They engage in these extreme driving actions to overcome the sense of boredom or sleepiness, as they are constantly on the same routes and lack adequate rest. They cannot refuse their duties,” Susmana said.
Furthermore, Susmana suggests that bus drivers often feel the pressure to quickly reach their destinations in order to pick up more passengers, leading them to drive in a hurried and careless manner. This behaviour, he warns, can have catastrophic consequences if left unchecked.
To address this issue, Susmana emphasises the need for strict enforcement against reckless bus drivers. He argues that mere warnings are not enough and that harsher punishments, such as suspending the driver’s license or imposing severe penalties on the transportation company, are necessary to deter such dangerous practices.
“The easiest solution is to impose harsh punishments on the company and the driver. Warnings are not enough; they need to be restrained, for instance. If not, it is only a matter of time before a tragic accident occurs,” Susmana said.
It is worth noting that the Sugeng Rahayu bus company has a history of being involved in multiple accidents in East Java over the past year, with seven recorded incidents during the period of January to September. This raises serious concerns about the safety standards and practices within the company, and the need for immediate intervention to prevent further endangerment of road users.
