29-4-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Residents of Rantau Panjang, situated near the Malaysia-Thailand border, were startled from their sleep in the early hours of the morning by the reverberations of explosions and gunfire near Sungai Golok at approximately 1 am today.
Reports from Harian Metro suggest that the disturbances are suspected to have emanated from the Sungai Golok district in Thailand’s Narathiwat province.
Zaidi Abdullah, aged 42, recounted that he was asleep at his residence, just a few meters away from Sungai Golok, when he was abruptly awakened by a loud explosion, followed by what appeared to be an exchange of gunfire.
Realizing that the commotion likely originated in the neighbouring country, Zaidi made the decision for his family to remain indoors.
He noted that the sounds of explosions and gunfire ceased momentarily before resuming, prompting other residents to discuss the events on Facebook.
“Given the proximity of my house to Sungai Golok, such incidents have sadly become somewhat commonplace. Nevertheless, there’s still an underlying concern for our safety,” Zaidi expressed.
While no official reports of incidents in Thailand have surfaced yet, several videos capturing the sounds of explosions have circulated on social media platforms.
