15-8-2023 (MEXICO CITY) Authorities announced on Monday (Aug 14) that over a dozen bodies have been discovered in freezers in a Mexican region grappling with the devastating impact of drug cartel-related violence. Prosecutor Veronica Hernandez revealed that six suspects have been apprehended following the chilling revelation in the city of Poza Rica, located in the eastern state of Veracruz.
Tragically, the initial investigations indicate that the number of bodies may exceed 13, Hernandez informed reporters. The shocking discovery unfolded on Sunday when law enforcement pursued a suspect who sought refuge in a building where three individuals had been held captive, officials disclosed on the condition of anonymity. Subsequently, the police conducted operations in the vicinity, leading to the unearthing of additional remains in various locations.
Veracruz, recognized as one of Mexico’s most volatile regions, has been plagued by intense clashes between rival gangs vying for dominance over lucrative drug trafficking routes to the United States. Since the commencement of a controversial military anti-drug campaign in 2006, the Latin American nation has registered over 400,000 homicides. Furthermore, more than 110,000 disappearances have been reported since 1962, with the majority attributed to criminal organizations.
