223-6-2023 (JAKARTA) A search operation is currently underway in Indonesia’s eastern region for a boat that has gone missing with eight crew members on board. The local search and rescue agency official, George Randang, confirmed the news to the media on Friday.
The search was initiated on Thursday after the owner of the boat, identified as KM Farida, reported the incident to the local search and rescue agency on the same day. The vessel, which was carrying construction materials and the eight-member crew, departed from the district of Mimika in Central Papua province on Monday morning and was expected to reach the district of Asmat in South Papua on Tuesday afternoon.
The search and rescue team is scouring the area to locate the missing boat and its crew. The authorities have not yet released any information about the possible reasons for the boat’s disappearance.
Indonesia, with its vast archipelago of around 17,000 islands, has a history of maritime accidents due to lax safety standards. These incidents have caused the loss of numerous lives and valuable resources. The government has been urged to improve safety standards and implement stricter regulations to prevent such accidents in the future.
