12-6-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) The BMW Car Club Singapore has issued an apology on its Facebook page for a “mistake” related to a driving event organized by the club in Penang.
In a Facebook post on Jun. 11, the club acknowledged that it was working with the local authorities to address the incident.
The apology came after a video circulated on the Facebook page “We are Malaysians,” capturing a convoy of BMW cars obstructing traffic on the Penang Bridge by driving slowly across both lanes and the road shoulder.
The video, captioned “These bunch of cars are blocking the road,” appeared to be filmed from a vehicle following the convoy. Throughout the video, two Malaysian men could be heard expressing their frustration in Malay about the behavior of the convoy, highlighting how the cars were not giving way and were blocking the entire highway. One of them remarked, “The cars are expensive, but they drive so slow. Our lorry is faster!”
The video sparked anger among many Malaysians who tagged various Malaysian authorities, including Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke, in their responses.
According to reports from Malaysian media outlet World of Buzz, a police report was lodged in response to the incident. The police subsequently summoned all the drivers to the Seberang Perai Selatan Police Headquarters at 12:10 am on Jun. 11.
In its statement, the club mentioned that the “investigation” has been concluded and it is now reviewing its plans to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The club assured the public that it is implementing additional measures to enhance its processes and ensure better control going forward.
