16-6-2023 (BEIJING) The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has announced a substantial donation of $50 million to the Global Health Drug Discovery Institute (GHDDI) in Beijing over the course of five years. This generous contribution aims to advance the development of drugs targeting infectious diseases, particularly tuberculosis and malaria, which disproportionately affect individuals in low and middle-income countries. The foundation’s initiative seeks to make a significant impact on global health outcomes.
GHDDI, established in 2016 as a non-profit research organization in China, is a collaborative effort involving the foundation, Tsinghua University, and the Beijing municipal government. In addition to the foundation’s substantial financial support, the municipal government will also contribute funding of the same magnitude. Furthermore, Tsinghua University has pledged ongoing support for research platforms, the transformation of achievements, and talent training.
Ding Sheng, the head of GHDDI and a professor at Tsinghua University, expressed the tremendous significance of this new round of financial and professional support. The institute is committed to addressing global health challenges by accelerating the development of novel drugs.
