8-3-2024 (WASHINGTON) In a fiery speech to Congress on Thursday (March 7), President Joe Biden directly took on his election rival, Donald Trump, accusing him of endangering US democracy and being too accommodating to Russia. The President, a Democrat, used his last State of the Union address before the November 5 election to lay out his case for four more years in the White House.
Speaking before a joint session of the House of Representatives and the Senate, Biden did not shy away from criticising Trump’s actions and policies. He accused Trump of downplaying the truth about the January 6, 2021, Capitol assault, cozying up to Russian President Vladimir Putin, and thwarting a bill aimed at tightening restrictions at the US-Mexico border.
Biden opened his speech by condemning Trump’s remarks inviting Putin to invade other NATO nations if they did not increase defense spending. “Now my predecessor, a former Republican president, tells Putin, quote, ‘Do whatever you want,'” Biden stated. “I think it’s outrageous, it’s dangerous and it’s unacceptable.” He further reiterated a commitment to supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
The President highlighted differences with Trump on issues such as abortion rights, the economy, and healthcare. Biden accused Republicans of attempting to rewrite history regarding the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, and criticized their efforts to roll back healthcare provisions under the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).
Despite facing discontent from progressives over his stance on Israel and criticism from Republicans regarding immigration, Biden received a warm reception from Democrats in the chamber. However, Trump, using his Truth Social platform, criticised Biden’s speech, stating, “He looks so angry when he’s talking, which is a trait of people who know they are ‘losing it.'”
The speech addressed key issues such as the economy, tax reform, and housing costs. Biden proposed measures to lower housing costs, including a $10,000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers. He also advocated for tax reforms targeting wealthy Americans and corporations.
Biden sought to address concerns over his support for Israel’s offensive in Gaza by announcing plans for the US military to build a port on Gaza’s Mediterranean coast for receiving humanitarian assistance. He also reiterated the need for a $95 billion aid package for weapons to Ukraine, highlighting the ongoing geopolitical challenges.
As the election draws near, Biden’s speech aimed to resonate with voters, presenting a clear contrast with Trump’s policies. The President emphasised his vision for the future, tackling issues relevant to the American public and attempting to rally support for his re-election bid.
