15-7-2023 (BARCELONA) UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, has fined Barcelona and Manchester United for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations. Barcelona was fined €500,000 ($561,000) for wrongly reporting “profits on disposal of intangible assets” in 2022, while Manchester United was fined €300,000 for “minor break-even deficits”. Other teams, including Turkish clubs Istanbul Basaksehir and Trabzonspor, Belgian champions Royal Antwerp and Anderlecht, as well as Cypriot side APOEL and Turkey’s Konyaspor, were also fined €100,000 each for the same offence as United.
In a statement to British media, Manchester United said that while they were disappointed with the outcome, they accepted the fine for what UEFA acknowledged to be a minor technical breach of its previous FFP rules. The decisions come after the last round of monitoring using FFP rules, which have been replaced by new sustainability regulations announced last year.
A group of high-profile European clubs, including Paris St Germain, AC Milan and Inter Milan, who agreed to settlements with UEFA in September last year, have fulfilled targets set for the financial year 2022. UEFA added that these clubs would continue to be monitored for compliance next season.
