18-11-2023 (SINGAPORE) Balenciaga, the renowned luxury fashion brand, continues to push the boundaries of creativity with its unconventional product designs and fashion shows. The latest item causing a stir is the Balenciaga Towel Skirt, which closely resembles a towel casually wrapped around the waist after a shower.
Unveiled as part of the Spring 2024 Collection, the Balenciaga Towel Skirt has already become a subject of online criticism and confusion. Despite the skepticism, it seems to have struck a chord with Swedish furniture giant IKEA, who couldn’t resist creating their own version of the product, at a significantly lower price point.

The Balenciaga Towel Skirt, designed to be unisex, features an adjustable belt with a hidden buckle, ensuring it stays in place. To maintain the illusion of a real towel, the skirt includes two buttons on the inside of the waistline. The Balenciaga logo is embroidered on the front, distinguishing it from an ordinary towel. Crafted from 100% terry cotton, the skirt promises luxurious softness. However, the hefty price tag of S$1,250 may deter many potential buyers.
As expected, the internet responded with a flurry of jokes and sarcasm aimed at the peculiar garment. Some netizens humorously suggested needing a towel for their head as well, perhaps to conceal their identity while wearing the skirt in public.
Taking the opportunity to showcase their wit, IKEA’s UK branch recreated Balenciaga’s look, nearly piece-by-piece, including the model’s pose, but with their own “towel skirt.” Additionally, IKEA cleverly promoted their VINARN towel, available for a mere £16 (S$26.76). In a humorous twist, IKEA Singapore priced their VINARN towel at just S$12.50, making it a staggering 100 times cheaper than Balenciaga’s creation.
Ultimately, personal preferences will dictate which item individuals choose to invest their hard-earned money in.
