9-4-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Malaysian authorities have made progress in identifying one of the three assailants responsible for shooting and injuring two Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) personnel during the Op Khas Pagar Laut operation in Kunak waters.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed that one suspect has been identified, although efforts to ascertain the identities of the remaining two assailants are ongoing. However, he refrained from disclosing the nationality of the gunmen at this time.
Razarudin provided an update on the condition of the injured MMEA personnel, stating that one of them had undergone surgery to remove a bullet lodged in his eye and is currently in stable condition.
Describing the incident as a case of maritime robbery targeting individuals returning from Kunak to Semporna by boat for festive celebrations, Razarudin emphasised the need for heightened vigilance at sea.
He made these remarks during a press conference following his attendance at a ceremony for the handover of duties at the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) directorate, held at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) in Kuala Lumpur.
In response to the shooting, Razarudin disclosed that marine police patrols have been intensified to ensure the safety and security of maritime activities in the area.
The incident occurred at 8:40 am yesterday, as detailed by MMEA Lahad Datu Maritime Zone director Maritime Commander Dr Suzanna Razali Chan. The two injured personnel, Maritime Petty Officer Zainal Abad Komel, 45, and Maritime Leading Rate Prayrie De Cuella Jimin, 35, were aboard the Banggi 48 vessel conducting the operation when they were targeted by the armed suspects.
Upon approaching a blue boat for inspection, the assailants opened fire, injuring the MMEA personnel before fleeing the scene. The wounded individuals were promptly transported to Kunak Hospital for medical treatment.
