30-12-2024 (BALI) A holiday swim turned fatal for an Australian tourist at Bali’s Pasut Beach when powerful ocean currents claimed his life despite valiant rescue efforts by local authorities and residents.
The victim, identified only as Jaccob, was swimming with his wife at approximately 4 pm local time when they encountered difficulties in the turbulent waters off Tibubiu Village in Tabanan’s Kerambitan District. Witnesses reported seeing the couple struggling against high waves before Jaccob began signalling desperately for assistance.
Local MP I Ketut Arsana Yasa, who participated in the rescue operation, described the dramatic scenes that unfolded. “Upon receiving word from my son, I immediately rushed to the scene and launched a traditional jukung fishing boat to aid in the rescue,” Yasa told reporters.
A team of local residents, alongside Yasa, managed to retrieve the unconscious tourist from the powerful surf using the fishing vessel. Despite their swift response, Jaccob’s condition deteriorated rapidly after reaching shore. He was rushed to Tabanan Regional Hospital in Yasa’s personal vehicle but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
I Nyoman Sri Nadha Giri, who heads Tabanan’s Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), confirmed the incident whilst issuing a stern warning about the beach’s hazardous conditions. “The coastal waters at Pasut Beach are characterised by strong tidal currents that pose significant risks to swimmers. We strongly urge both locals and tourists to exercise extreme caution when visiting this area,” Giri emphasised.
