22-3-2025 (BALI) An Australian tourist lost her life when a snorkelling expedition turned catastrophic amidst treacherous sea conditions. Anna Maree, 39, perished after being thrust overboard by a powerful wave near the waters of Kelingking.
The ill-fated Sea Dragon vessel, ferrying eleven Australian holidaymakers and two Indonesian crew members, succumbed to the tempestuous waters whilst en route to the diminutive island paradise of Nusa Penida. The group’s underwater exploration came to an abrupt end when their craft encountered a sequence of formidable waves, with the second surge completely overturning the vessel.
Swift intervention from a nearby boat proved crucial in plucking twelve survivors from the turbulent waters, though two tourists required medical attention. Local authorities confirmed that all survivors, including the Indonesian crew members, received treatment at a neighbourhood medical facility and have since stabilised.
This latest incident underscores the persistent maritime safety concerns plaguing Indonesia’s vast archipelagic nation of 17,000 islands.
