11-10-2023 (SYDNEY) Cheng Lei, an Australian journalist, has finally returned to her homeland after an agonizing period of over three years in detention in China. Ms. Cheng, who had been working as a journalist for the state-owned broadcaster CGTN, was arrested and accused of allegedly supplying state secrets overseas. Throughout her ordeal, she consistently rejected these grave allegations.
The announcement of Cheng Le’s return came following the conclusion of legal proceedings against her in China. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed her release and stated that she had been reunited with her family in Melbourne. Mr. Albanese personally spoke with Ms. Cheng earlier today, underlining the significant moment of her return.
In a statement, Prime Minister Albanese shared, “I spoke to her about her recent message, of course, that she made to the Australian people. She’s a very strong and resilient person, though. And when I spoke with her, she was delighted to be back in Melbourne. The government has been seeking this for a long period of time, and her return will be warmly welcomed not just by her family and friends but by all Australians.”
The prime minister also disclosed that Ms. Cheng’s arrival in Australia was marked by a warm welcome and support. Foreign Minister Penny Wong was present at the airport to greet and assist her upon her return, reflecting the government’s commitment to ensuring her safe repatriation.
