9-7-2023 (CLEVELAND) At least nine people have been wounded in a mass shooting in Cleveland, according to the city’s police department. No fatalities have been reported. Jennifer Ciaccia, a spokesperson for the Cleveland Division of Police, said that preliminary information suggests that a suspect opened fire on a group of people and then fled the scene.
The shooting took place on West 6th Street and Johnson Court in Cleveland early on Sunday morning. Officers were already in the area working a weekly detail when they responded to a report of multiple people shot. They arrived quickly and provided medical aid on the scene. The police are currently reviewing evidence and video and interviewing victims at MetroHealth Medical Center.
The shooting is yet another example of the United States’ ongoing struggle with gun violence, as mass shootings continue to occur with alarming frequency. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been at least 365 mass shootings in the US so far in 2023. The Archive defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people are shot, excluding the shooter.
