24-6-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) The highly anticipated grand opening of Malaysia’s first-ever Apple Store at the TRX Exchange Mall in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, June 22, has spawned an unexpected resale market for the commemorative tote bags distributed to attendees. Opportunistic individuals have seized the chance to capitalize on the hype, listing the coveted bags on various platforms at exorbitant prices ranging from RM250 (S$72) to a staggering RM3,000.
According to reports from the New Straits Times (NST), a search on Carousell Malaysia using the keywords ‘Apple TRX tote’ revealed numerous listings featuring the sought-after bags. Some sellers proudly displayed multiple bags for sale, while others stated that their listed prices were non-negotiable. The resale frenzy has even extended beyond Malaysian borders, with one listing on Carousell Singapore offering the tote bag for SGD$100.
The limited-edition tote bags, distributed exclusively to early-bird shoppers, have quickly become a coveted collector’s item for Apple enthusiasts who were unable to attend the grand opening. The sleek, flat square box housing the bags features a special Apple logo replicating the new store’s distinctive three-dimensional roof design, adding to their allure.
The white canvas tote bags themselves bear Apple Malaysia’s slogan “Jom” (meaning “let’s go” in English) printed on the front, while the back showcases the Apple logo and the words “Apple The Exchange TRX” emblazoned in gold.
The exorbitant resale prices of these commemorative bags have sparked a heated online debate, with some netizens expressing bewilderment over the hype surrounding a “mere tote bag.” One commenter quipped, “I’m not crazy enough to buy things which were given out for free. Those who want to buy [the bag] better go and take some medicine.”
However, others have praised the savvy sellers for capitalizing on the high demand from Apple fans. One netizen remarked, “The one who sells this is so smart. He tests the market and if it sells, he is the one who makes a profit.” Another user astutely observed, “The sellers know this is the difference between Apple fans and Apple users. Apple fans are willing to pay for these.”
