12-10-2024 (JAKARTA) Apple’s latest flagship smartphone, the iPhone 16, has been barred from sale in Indonesia due to the tech giant’s alleged failure to meet local content requirements. This development comes just weeks after the global launch of the iPhone 16 series on 10 September 2024, with sales commencing in many markets, including neighbouring Malaysia, on 20 September.
Indonesian Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang has stated that the iPhone 16 cannot be sold in the country until Apple renews its local content requirements certification, known as TKDN, and fulfils its investment commitments. The certification mandates that products like the iPhone 16 must comprise at least 40% locally sourced components.
“Apple’s iPhone 16 cannot be sold yet in Indonesia as the extension of the TKDN certification is still pending, awaiting further investment realisation from Apple,” Mr Gumiwang explained. He further revealed that Apple’s investment in Indonesia has only reached IDR1.48 trillion (S$124million) , falling short of its total commitment of IDR1.71 trillion (about S$143.2 million).
This regulatory hurdle has sparked mixed reactions among Indonesian consumers. While some support the government’s stance, viewing it as a necessary measure to boost local industry, others perceive it as bureaucratic red tape hindering access to cutting-edge technology.
The ban has led to resourceful Indonesian Apple enthusiasts seeking alternative means to acquire the latest iPhones. Many are reportedly turning to neighbouring countries like Malaysia and Singapore to purchase the devices. However, this workaround comes at a significant cost. According to calculations by Bloomberg Technoz, bringing an iPhone 16 purchased in Singapore back to Indonesia could incur additional expenses of up to IDR18 million (about S$1,500) due to taxes and International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) registration fees.
This is not the first time Apple has faced delays in introducing its products to the Indonesian market. The previous model, iPhone 15, also experienced a delayed release in Indonesia, only becoming available in late October 2023, over a month after its global launch.
