26-3-2025 – Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has rejected a $10 million ransom demand from hackers who recently infiltrated Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad’s (MAHB) digital infrastructure.
Speaking at the 218th Police Day commemoration at the Police Training Centre, the Premier emphasised his unwavering position on national security. “Our leadership shall not bow to ultimatums from criminals or betrayers, whether domestic or foreign,” Ibrahim declared, taking merely moments to dismiss the extortion attempt.
The cyber breach, which occurred within the past 48 hours, has prompted the administration to reassess its digital defence strategy. Rather than capitulating to criminal demands, the government plans to bolster its cybersecurity framework through increased funding allocation to various agencies, including Bank Negara and law enforcement divisions.
Whilst specific details about the cyber incident’s resolution remain undisclosed, the Prime Minister’s swift rejection of the ransom demand underscores Malaysia’s hardline approach against digital extortion attempts.
In broader security matters, Ibrahim lauded recent achievements in border control and anti-trafficking operations, particularly highlighting the General Operations Force’s coordinated efforts in curtailing cross-border criminal activities. He noted significant progress in dismantling drug trafficking networks, referencing a recent operation that prevented Malaysia from being exploited as a transit point for narcotics bound for Australian shores.
The Premier also addressed internal challenges, emphasising the critical importance of maintaining religious and racial harmony whilst combating corruption within enforcement agencies. “Stern and impartial action against wrongdoers, regardless of their standing or influence, is essential for fostering a healthier political environment,” he asserted.
