7-5-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Describing it as “shocking,” Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed dismay over the staggering loss of RM277 billion to corruption over the past five years. Speaking at the launch of the National Anti-Corruption Strategies (NACS) 2024-2028 at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre on Tuesday (May 7), the Prime Minister underscored the gravity of the issue, emphasising that corruption should not be taken lightly.
Anwar drew attention to the warnings issued by former Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein about the infiltration of corruption into the nation in 1961 and 1962, which, unfortunately, went unheeded. He stressed that the funds lost to corruption could have been utilised to address critical developmental challenges, particularly in eradicating poverty.
Highlighting the potential impact of curbing corruption, Anwar envisioned the allocation of resources towards initiatives such as upgrading schools and hospitals, as well as enhancing the welfare of citizens, farmers, and fishermen. He asserted that combating corruption required more than just numerous plans and strategies but necessitated strong political will, dedicated enforcement bodies, robust legislation, and clear direction.
Earlier in the event, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki revealed that RM277 billion was lost to corruption between 2018 and 2023. However, Azam noted that Malaysia had made strides in combating corruption, as evidenced by its improved ranking on the global Corruption Perception Index in recent years.
Anwar stressed that the fight against corruption was a collective responsibility that extended beyond the MACC to encompass the entire nation. He subsequently launched the NACS, succeeding the National Anti-Corruption Plan (NACP) 2019-2023, with a renewed focus on the well-being of the people through the Malaysia Madani agenda.
