19-3-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) As Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim embarks on a global quest to attract investments and propel Malaysia’s economic growth, he has expressed disappointment at the nation’s preoccupation with trivial matters upon his return from abroad. In a candid address at the monthly assembly of the Prime Minister’s Department, Anwar lamented the stark contrast between his efforts to bolster the country’s prosperity and the petty debates dominating the domestic discourse.
“While I was talking about investments (abroad), I came back to Malaysia to the bak kut teh and (the opening of) school canteens during Ramadan issues,” Anwar stated, a hint of exasperation evident in his voice. “Those are the hot topics being discussed, as if they concern our entire existence and dignity. I hope this won’t be the case anymore because we can do better.”
Fresh from a work visit to Germany, where he sought to forge economic ties and attract foreign investment, the Prime Minister expressed disappointment at the nation’s fixation on inconsequential matters, particularly during the sacred month of Ramadan.
“Malaysia needs strong economic growth instead of never-ending bickering,” he asserted, his words echoing a call for unity and focus on the nation’s collective well-being.
Anwar’s remarks come in the wake of heightened tensions surrounding the contentious issues of bak kut teh stalls operating during Ramadan and the opening of school canteens during the fasting month. These debates, fueled by communal sensitivities, have threatened to undermine the spirit of togetherness and mutual respect that should prevail during this sacred period.
“Togetherness and mutual respect are part of the spirit of Ramadan,” Anwar emphasized, his words resonating as a rallying cry for all parties to end such divisive polemics.
The Prime Minister’s impassioned plea extended beyond the confines of religious discourse, urging Malaysians to engage in discussions that would tangibly benefit the nation’s progress. “Digital transformation, renewable energy… these are among the important things for our country to talk about instead,” he asserted, painting a vision of a nation focused on innovation, sustainability, and economic prosperity.
Invoking the blessings of the Almighty, Anwar expressed hope that Malaysians would find the strength to prioritize the nation’s collective interests, transcending petty squabbles and embracing a collective spirit of progress. “I hope Allah will give us all the strength to focus on what’s important so we can uplift the country’s dignity once again,” he declared.
Accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali, Anwar’s address underscored his commitment to principled leadership, one that seeks to elevate the nation’s dignity and forge a path toward prosperity.
“If we are firm in our principles, we can do and achieve everything we desire,” he affirmed, his words resonating as a clarion call for unity, purpose, and unwavering dedication to the nation’s advancement.
