19-10-2023 (BANGKOK) An ambulance driver in Nakhon Nayok, Thailand has found himself at the center of controversy after making an unexpected detour to purchase fried bananas from a roadside stall while en route to the hospital with a patient. The incident, which took place on October 13, has garnered attention after being reported by Thai PBS World.
The patient in question, 64-year-old Sommai Thongkerd, was being transported to the hospital due to breathing difficulties. However, during the journey, the ambulance driver apparently took a brief pit stop to collect the pre-ordered fried bananas. Sommai’s daughter, Suchada Mali, 32, who accompanied her father in the ambulance, witnessed the entire incident unfold.
Expressing her dismay, Suchada took to social media to voice her concerns after her complaints to the hospital went unanswered. The hospital, upon becoming aware of the situation, took prompt action by sending a representative to apologize to the patient’s family. They emphasized that the ambulance had only made a three-second stop during the detour.
Thankfully, Sommai received the necessary medical attention upon reaching the hospital and was subsequently discharged the following day in stable condition. Despite the patient’s positive outcome, the incident has raised questions about the professionalism and priorities of the ambulance driver during an emergency situation.
The hospital authorities have assured the public that they take this matter seriously and will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. They intend to address any lapses in protocols and reinforce the importance of maintaining the highest standards of patient care and safety.
