22-6-2023 (PHNOM PENH) The Battambang Gendarmerie announced in a news release on Wednesday (June 21) that military police in Battambang province, northwest Cambodia, have successfully apprehended an alleged drug trafficker, seizing a significant haul of nearly 32 kg of illicit drugs.
The 23-year-old suspect, a local resident, was captured on Monday afternoon in Battambang provincial town after an extensive investigation spanning several months.
Cambodia does not impose the death penalty for drug trafficking. However, according to the country’s laws, anyone found guilty of trafficking more than 80 grams of illicit drugs may face a life sentence.
During the period of January to May 2023, Cambodia’s Anti-Drug Police Department reported the arrest of 7,230 suspects involved in drug-related activities, including 136 foreigners. Additionally, law enforcement authorities seized a total of almost 785 kg of narcotics.
The confiscated drugs primarily consisted of ketamine, crystal meth, methamphetamine pills, heroin, ecstasy, and cocaine.
