14-6-2023 (LONDON) Paul McCartney, former member of the iconic band The Beatles, revealed in an interview with BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday that an AI-assisted process will allow the release of a “last” Beatles song featuring the voice of the late John Lennon.
McCartney did not disclose the specific title of the track but mentioned that the technology was applied to “a demo that John had, that we worked on.” He further explained that the AI technology enabled them to extract and purify John’s voice, facilitating the mixing process to create what McCartney referred to as the final Beatles record.
With the project now completed, McCartney confirmed that the song would be made available to the public sometime this year.
According to an article by the BBC, the anticipated song is likely to be “Now and Then,” a demo recorded by Lennon in 1978, a couple of years prior to his untimely passing in 1980.
McCartney also shared insights into how director Peter Jackson utilized AI technology during the production of the 2021 documentary series, “The Beatles: Get Back.” The series delves into the band’s journey in creating their 1970 album, “Let It Be.”
Jackson employed the technology to enhance the quality of Lennon’s voice from a low-fidelity cassette recording. By utilizing AI, the director was able to separate the vocals and piano, enhancing the overall audio experience.
The use of AI in music has generated both excitement and concern regarding its potential implications. McCartney acknowledged this and described it as an interesting challenge that everyone in the industry is currently grappling with.
“There’s a good side to it and then a scary side, and we’ll just have to see where that leads,” McCartney said, reflecting on the broader impact of AI technology in the music industry.
