12-12-2024 (MANILA) The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) declared Thursday their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s leadership, notwithstanding Vice President Sara Duterte’s recent rejection of military security personnel.
In a press briefing at AFP headquarters, military spokesperson Colonel Francel Padilla emphasised that protecting high-ranking government officials remains a cornerstone of their constitutional mandate.
“The security and welfare of our nation’s highest officials, including both the President and Vice President, constitute a fundamental aspect of our responsibilities,” Padilla stated. “Whilst operational specifics shall remain confidential, we are steadfast in our commitment to fulfilling this duty.”
The announcement follows Vice President Duterte’s controversial declaration on Wednesday, wherein she declined further AFP security assignments, citing trust-related concerns. Duterte had previously communicated with AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner, Jr., expressing her preference for private security arrangements.
When questioned about the proposed private security alternative, the AFP maintained a measured stance, redirecting focus to their constitutional obligations rather than explicitly addressing the proposal’s viability.
“Our organisation comprises highly trained professionals with specialised expertise in executive protection,” Padilla explained. “We shall ensure the Vice President’s security remains uncompromised.”
The military spokesperson further revealed that they await formal directives regarding an investigation into the Vice Presidential Security and Protection Group (VPSPG) members.
Addressing mounting concerns about political tensions, the AFP reaffirmed its non-partisan stance. “Amidst the political discourse, our focus remains steadfast on national security,” Padilla emphasised. “The AFP’s allegiance transcends political affiliations, prioritising national unity over partisan interests.”
