23-5-2023 (California) In a significant move towards integrating artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities into its suite of creative software, Adobe Inc announced on Tuesday its latest addition of AI technology for generating imagery to its flagship image editing software, Photoshop. The San Jose-based company aims to empower creative professionals with advanced AI tools that enhance their capabilities.
One notable feature being introduced to Photoshop is called “Generative Fill,” which enables users to extend the content of a cropped image by incorporating computer-generated elements or adding features based on text descriptions. For instance, this feature can transform a photo of a single flower into a picturesque field of flowers backed by a majestic mountain range.
Adobe has rigorously tested the AI technology over a span of six weeks on a dedicated website. To address any legal concerns regarding the data used to train these systems, the company has employed a proprietary technology called Firefly. This core system has been purposefully designed to utilize legally obtained image data, ensuring compliance for commercial usage.
Ely Greenfield, Chief Technology Officer for digital media at Adobe, clarified that the intention behind this tool is not to replace graphic artists, but rather to accelerate their creative process by facilitating the creation of composite images from multiple ideas. By streamlining production work, this innovative feature allows creative professionals to devote less time to scouring photo archives and manually piecing together fragments of existing images.
