28-7-2023 (MANILA) The local government of Abra declared a state of calamity on Friday in the aftermath of Typhoon Egay, which wreaked havoc on the province, causing extensive damage to crops, livestock, and homes.
The province has been grappling with relentless heavy rains and powerful winds, leading to the displacement and distress of residents. Agricultural crops and livestock have suffered severe losses, while numerous homes belonging to Abreños have been significantly damaged, as stated in Abra’s Resolution No. 143. The declaration was made based on the recommendations of the provincial disaster risk reduction and management council.
Despite Typhoon Egay exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Thursday and no storm signals remaining in effect across the country, its impact continues to be felt as it intensifies the southwest monsoon, resulting in persistent heavy rainfall.
Tragically, the cyclone has claimed the lives of 13 individuals, with an additional 20 people reported missing. Among the deceased, nine were from the Cordillera Administrative Region, which encompasses the province of Abra.
