22-6-2023 (SINGAPORE) The first-ever Olympic Esports Week (OEW) kicked off in Singapore on Thursday, marking the start of a four-day event where players will compete in the finals of the Olympic Esports Series 2023.
Organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in collaboration with Singapore’s Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, Sport Singapore, and the Singapore National Olympic Council, the Olympic Esports Series 2023 will feature games from 10 sports disciplines. These include archery, baseball, chess, cycling, dance, motorsport, sailing, shooting, taekwondo, and tennis. A total of 110 players from 64 countries and regions are expected to participate in the event.
Apart from the intense competitive matches, spectators will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the latest advancements in virtual sports and gaming within the free-to-play zone during the esports festival.
During the opening ceremony of the OEW, IOC President Thomas Bach delivered an inspiring virtual speech, addressing the players by saying, “Dear players, your stage is set, your time to shine is now.” His words served as encouragement for the participants, highlighting the significance of the event within the esports and sporting communities.
In her virtual address, President Halimah Yacob of Singapore extended a warm welcome to all the players attending the esports festival. She emphasized the importance of embracing the Olympic values of excellence, respect, and friendship, as well as the spirit of fair play that unites both traditional sports and esports.
President Yacob took the opportunity to announce the official launch of the OEW, reinforcing Singapore’s commitment to fostering the growth and recognition of esports on an international stage.
The Olympic Esports Week in Singapore represents a significant milestone in the convergence of esports and traditional sporting events. It showcases the IOC’s recognition of the rising popularity and cultural significance of esports, while providing a platform for talented players from around the world to compete at the highest level.
