19-6-2023 (MANILA) In a recent operation, Philippine security forces engaged in a deadly clash with an armed group, resulting in the killing of seven alleged members. The incident occurred in the southern Philippines, specifically in Datu Paglas town, Maguindanao del Sur province. The military reported that the confrontation took place early Sunday morning when a combined team of troops and police officers attempted to serve an arrest warrant at a hideout belonging to the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF).
According to the military’s report, the BIFF opened fire on the law enforcers, sparking a fierce exchange of gunfire. Tragically, seven suspects from the BIFF were killed during the shootout, while a police officer sustained injuries.
Following the clash, the government forces conducted a search and seizure operation, recovering a significant cache of firearms and ammunition. The seized items included M16 rifles and pistols, underscoring the potential danger posed by the armed group.
The BIFF, a relatively small militant organization aligned with the Islamic State group, has been held responsible for various acts of violence, including bombings, in the Central Mindanao region of the southern Philippines. The group emerged after splitting from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in 2014 when the latter chose to pursue a peaceful negotiation process with the government.
