16-6-2023 (LONDON) The successor to Boris Johnson’s seat in the British Parliament will be determined in a by-election vote on July 20, as confirmed by the local council on Thursday (June 15). Johnson resigned from his position as the lawmaker for Uxbridge and South Ruislip, a constituency in West London, after an investigation into his conduct.
The former Prime Minister stepped down after reading a report by Parliament that looked into whether he had misled them about gatherings at his office during COVID-19 lockdowns. The report, which was published in full on June 15, found that Johnson had deliberately misled Parliament over the rule-breaking parties. However, Johnson has dismissed the report as a “lie” and a “charade.”
Hillingdon Council released a statement saying, “The by-election for the parliamentary constituency of Uxbridge and South Ruislip will take place on Thursday 20 July 2023 following the resignation of Boris Johnson as a Member of Parliament on Friday 12 June.”
Johnson resigned from his position as Prime Minister last year.
In addition to the by-election for Johnson’s seat, another by-election will be held on the same date to replace Johnson’s close ally, Nigel Adams, in his North Yorkshire seat. Adams resigned on Saturday.
Conservative lawmaker Nadine Dorries has also stated that she would stand down in support of Johnson, but she has not formally done so, and no date has been set yet for the by-election to replace her.
