14-6-2023 (BEIJING) Certain regions in China continue to uphold the tradition of “hazing” during weddings, often resulting in excessive and concerning practices that spark discussions among internet users. Recently, a video from Qujing City, Yunnan Province, went viral, showing bridesmaids being tied to utility poles and subjected to firecrackers. The footage received widespread criticism once it surfaced online.
Taiwanese media outlet “ETtoday News Cloud” cited a report from “Bus News” and revealed that the video was filmed on June 9th. In the initial segment, one bridesmaid is seen bound to a utility pole with transparent tape around her hands, while a groomsman sets off firecrackers beneath her feet. Simultaneously, another groomsman continuously wraps tape around her waist, securing her to the pole.
In a subsequent scene, two bridesmaids are also tied to utility poles, with one groomsman igniting firecrackers and throwing them towards their feet. One of the bridesmaids becomes so frightened that she utters profanity. Once the video circulated online, Chinese netizens swiftly condemned such “vulgar wedding hazing,” expressing their disapproval. Comments included: “This is too dangerous. What if their dresses catch fire and someone gets injured? It’s absolute nonsense,” and “This is bullying.
Such a vulgar wedding hazing has no place.” Some even suggested that the bridesmaids should report the incident to the authorities.
