13-6-2023 (PHNOM PENH) Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen announced on Tuesday that the country will revise its election law to prohibit politicians who do not vote from running in elections.
During a gathering with nearly 20,000 garment factory workers in the capital city of Cambodia, Hun Sen stated that politicians who fail to cast their ballots on the day of the general election will be disqualified from standing for any level of election.
While Hun Sen acknowledged that it is the right of ordinary citizens to decide whether to participate in the electoral process, he emphasized that politicians have an obligation to vote. Failure to fulfill this responsibility will result in the revocation of their candidacy rights for all elections.
The National Election Committee (NEC) has confirmed that Cambodia is set to hold a general election for the 125-seat National Assembly on July 23, 2023. Over 9.7 million Cambodians have registered to exercise their voting rights.
