13-6-2023 (MOSCOW) A state of emergency has been declared in the vicinity of the Lena River in Russia’s Irkutsk region following a collision between two fuel tankers. The incident resulted in damage to a container and a spillage of gasoline into the water, according to Governor Igor Kobzev.
Governor Kobzev, communicating through the Telegram messaging app, revealed that the damaged container was transporting 138 metric tons of gasoline. Authorities are currently working to ascertain the exact amount that has been released into the Lena River.
The situation is further complicated by the presence of other vessels still navigating the river, as well as downstream settlements, Kobzev added.
The collision occurred late on Monday, prompting emergency services to swiftly respond in order to prevent the further spread of the gasoline and to safeguard the river’s water supply.
The Lena River, ranking as the world’s 11th longest, originates near Lake Baikal in the southeastern Siberian region of Irkutsk before flowing into the Arctic Ocean.
