11-6-2023 (JAKARTA) Indonesia’s meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency reported that a 5.2-magnitude earthquake jolted the eastern province of Papua on Sunday.
The seismic event took place at 13:51 p.m. local time in Jakarta (0651 GMT), with its epicenter located 18 km northeast of the Waropen district. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 48 km beneath the earth’s surface, according to the agency.
Fortunately, the tremors from the earthquake did not pose a significant threat of generating large-scale tsunamis or giant waves.
Indonesia, being situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity. The country’s geographical location makes it susceptible to frequent seismic events.
Authorities and local disaster management agencies remain vigilant to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in affected regions, providing necessary support and monitoring the situation closely.
