(Wellington) A 48-year-old homeless man made his appearance in a New Zealand court on Friday (May 19), facing two charges of arson, as authorities discovered a fifth body amidst the charred remains of a hostel in Wellington.
The devastating fire erupted in the early hours of Tuesday on the top floor of Loafers Lodge, located in the Newtown suburb. The blaze caused significant structural damage, impeding the ongoing recovery efforts.
New Zealand Fire and Emergency had initially confirmed a death toll of at least six. However, Inspector Dion Bennett, acting Wellington police district commander, clarified that as of now, only five bodies have been identified, and fewer than 10 individuals remain unaccounted for.
Bennett addressed reporters during a press conference on Friday, stating, “Until we have thoroughly examined all sections of the building, we are reluctant to confirm the exact number of deceased.”
Loafers Lodge offered accommodation to various individuals, including construction workers, hospital staff, as well as those receiving sickness and disability benefits. Additionally, some occupants were serving community sentences for minor offenses.
The 48-year-old suspect, whose name has been suppressed until his next court appearance, appeared briefly in the Wellington District Court on Friday afternoon. In the dock, he exhibited signs of agitation, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt over his head and engaging in hand gestures and dancing aimed at the media.
“He did it,” he shouted before being reprimanded by the judge to maintain silence. He also expressed his intention to dismiss his lawyer since he knew bail would not be granted.
His lawyer will continue to represent him, and he was remanded in custody until the following month. Further charges may be brought against him.
Bennett informed the press that the police have been unable to access certain areas of the building due to ongoing safety concerns stemming from structural issues.
“The scene examination will continue throughout the weekend, and we aim to recover the fifth individual as quickly as possible,” Bennett stated.
