11-3-2025 (JAKARTA) A colossal whale carcass has washed ashore on the remote coastline of Simeulue Island, drawing significant local attention. The massive marine mammal, measuring an impressive seven metres in length and weighing approximately 2.5 tonnes, was discovered by local fishermen along the beach of Angkeo Village in West Teupah District.
The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) chief of Simeulue, Zulfadli, confirmed the discovery whilst noting that the species of the whale remains unidentified. The remarkable finding occurred during the early hours of Tuesday, 11th March, along the Indian Ocean-facing shoreline.
Situated roughly 180 nautical miles from Sumatra’s western coast, Simeulue regency stands as one of Aceh province’s outermost archipelagic territories. This autonomous region, home to nearly 98,000 residents spread across 138 villages within 10 districts, gained its independent administrative status in 1999 when it separated from West Aceh regency.
Local authorities, including the Marine and Fisheries Department’s secretary Roli Mindansyah Putra, have yet to implement evacuation procedures for the deceased cetacean.
