5-3-2025 (BANGKOK) A reckless late-night incident involving two tuk-tuks has left three individuals with serious injuries following what witnesses described as an impromptu street race along Ratchadaphisek Road in Bangkok’s Yannawa district.
The chaotic scene unfolded at approximately 10 pm on Monday when the iconic three-wheeled vehicles, beloved by tourists for their nimble navigation of the Thai capital’s bustling thoroughfares, were reportedly engaged in a dangerous overtaking contest.
Local residents who witnessed the ordeal recounted how one driver’s ill-judged lane change whilst attempting to gain advantage resulted in a dramatic collision. The impact caused one tuk-tuk to overturn completely, leaving its 28-year-old operator, Pichit, with critical head trauma including a significant laceration. Meanwhile, the second driver and their passenger both suffered fractured legs in the violent crash.
“We’re investigating the circumstances behind this apparent competition on public roads,” said Pol Lt-Col Thiradej Sonklin from Bang Phong Phang Police Station, who is overseeing the case. Authorities are awaiting toxicology reports to determine whether alcohol played a role in the incident.
The auto-rickshaws, which offer passengers an unobstructed view of Bangkok’s vibrant streets and can deftly weave through traffic congestion and narrow side streets, form an integral part of the city’s transport landscape. Particularly favoured by foreign visitors, these distinctive vehicles have become synonymous with the Bangkok experience, though Monday’s incident highlights potential dangers when operated irresponsibly.
