24-2-2025 (SINGAPORE) In a challenging operation that spanned four days, firefighters have finally extinguished a stubborn blaze at a waste management facility in Kranji, adding to a concerning pattern of recurring fires at the same location.
The incident, which began on Wednesday morning at the Wah & Hua recycling facility on 11 Kranji Crescent, marks the fourth fire at these premises within seven years, following previous occurrences in 2018, 2023, and 2024.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) maintained a continuous presence at the site, working tirelessly to combat deep-seated pockets of fire within the waste heaps. The blaze, which initially generated smoke visible from distant areas including Jurong East, Bukit Panjang, Woodlands, and the Causeway, prompted the evacuation of nearby buildings.
At the height of the emergency response, more than seven fire engines and multiple ambulances were deployed to the scene. One individual required hospitalisation for smoke inhalation and burn injuries, highlighting the severity of the incident.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) has launched an investigation in collaboration with SCDF to determine the cause of the fire. The agency has indicated its commitment to reviewing and potentially updating guidelines for waste material management based on any new findings from this incident.
