13-2-2025 (TAIPEI) A devastating explosion tore through one of Taiwan’s premier shopping destinations today, claiming one life and leaving nine others injured in what witnesses described as scenes of chaos and destruction.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:00 local time at the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Zhonggang Store, a landmark retail establishment in central Taichung, when a powerful blast on the building’s 12th floor sent shockwaves through the surrounding district.
Emergency services confirmed that a male victim was pronounced dead at the scene, whilst another victim, a female, was rushed to hospital in critical condition showing no vital signs. Among the injured, two are reportedly fighting for their lives, with the remaining victims receiving treatment for various injuries.
“The explosion was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced,” said Lin Wei-chen, an office worker from an adjacent building. “The entire structure seemed to shudder, and then there was glass everywhere. It was terrifying.”
The force of the blast, which could be heard up to two kilometres away, was so intense that four individuals were reportedly thrown by the impact, according to ETtoday news network. The explosion left a trail of destruction, with debris scattered across neighbouring streets and significant damage to the building’s façade.
Taichung Fire Department officials have launched a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the explosion. “We’ve implemented our major casualty response protocol and are working to secure the area,” said Chief Fire Officer Chang Ming-hsien. “Our priority is ensuring there are no secondary incidents and that all victims receive immediate medical attention.”
